It seeks to involve the decision-makers to strengthen our health care system further. The Center aims to help this cause by supporting the outstanding research. The Center of Excellence in Genomic Medicine Research focuses on genome level approach of genetic diseases. It constantly encourages the development of novel technological and computational methods for the production and analysis of comprehensive data sets, and adopt alternative ways to develop and use genomic approaches for understanding biological systems of certain diseases and disorders. The CEGMR provide a large scale genomic screening in the diseases that are common in the Kingdom through advance system of various research units:

Advanced Sequencing Unit
Genome level:

  • Whole-genome resequencing
  • Targeted resequencing
  • Mutation detection and confirmation
  • Fragment analysis for linkage studies

Transcriptome level:

  • RNA sequencing
  • microRNA sequencing
  • Whoel transcriptome analysis

Epigenome level:

  • Chromatin Immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq)

Quantitative Genotyping Unit

  • Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) detection and validation
  • Mutation detection and validation

  • Quantitative expression analysis
  • Quantitative methylation analysis

Microarray Unit
This unit will provide large scale genomic screening in diseases that are common in the Kingdom using the state-of-the-art molecular profiling based on the Affymetrix and the Agilent technology.
The unit supports following applications:

  • Quality control on incoming samples
  • High throughput expression analysis
  • Molecular cytogenetics
  • Comparative genomic hybridization
  • Tiling array

Tissue Culture Unit (TCU)

  • Maintenance and propagation of cell lines
  • Isolation, propagation and freezing primary cells from diseased & normal individuals
  • Transient transfection of cell lines
  • Generation of stably transfected cell lines
  • Freezing and banking of cells

Stem Cell Unit (SCU)
Magnetic cell separation
Flow cytometer and cell sorting

  • Isolation and characterization of adult stem cells from peripheral blood, bone marrow, fatty tissues and muscles.
  • Clonogenic assays for quantification of stem cells from normal and cancer cases will be available.
  • In vitro and in vivo assays of hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells will be available.

Preimplantation Genetic Screening Unit (PGSU):

  • Training staff in relevant IVF, PGD and molecular techniques
  • Genetic counseling by trained counsellors
